Soaring Bee Deaths Threaten Many Crops

As a former bee keeper, I am very sad to learn that a mysterious malady is killing 40 to 50 percent of the honeybees needed to pollinate many fruits and vegetables. Drought, bee mites, and viruses are thought to contribute, but beekeepers especially suspect a growing soup of 150 pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, and other chemicals, especially neonicotinoids, which persist for weeks and even months. How do these chemicals interact? What are their consequences? Nobody knows. But smaller harvests and higher food prices are in prospect.
